Tristan Prettyman was born and raised in San Diego’s North County. She is a self taught musician who landed a record deal with Capital Records at the age of 22. She has released five albums over the last 12 years, very much doing things her own way. With the birth of her son a few years ago she became more interested in the food she was feeding herself and her family and studied to become a certified Health Coach.
She is now working on new music and sharing her love of wellness with her company The Good Path SD.
In this episode we talk about:
- how being bullied growing up affected her
- how we have to be willing to get uncomfortable to grow and get what we desire
- how having a fear is more work than moving into fear
- fears and songwriting, being a musician
- trusting the process in making music and needing to make “bad songs”to get to the good ones
- writing an album she didn’t feel great about but her record album forced her into and then getting vocal polyps so she never had to release and perform them
- how she found her way into being a musician while pursuing her dream to work for a surf company
- secretly playing her dad’s guitar and teaching herself how to play
- not reading music and owning that and not making that feel like a not good enough a musician
- how sometimes knowing more, trying to following the rules or being attached to how things are supposed to be or go creates missing the opportunity
- evaluating the why we are doing things and releasing expectations of what others want from us or what we thought we would do/want
- allowing ourselves to morph and grow
- getting her “break” by a friend’s roommate who needed music for a surf movie soundtrack
- feeling like she wasn’t polished or professional enough to be a musician and getting a call from Jack Johnson telling her to just do her
- learning to not apologize on stage becoming confident and allowing herself to have fun
- how when good things happen we sabotage ourselves and how we need to accept the good
- how important communicating and truly sharing what is coming up for you and the bullshit stories you are living into
- how hearing our negative feelings could be the key to our joy
- my step by step process to move
- taking a break from music to become an integrative nutrition health coach and how that has given her a newer perspective on her music career
- being in a relationship while being on tour and what the reality of that is
- her journey with divorce, the therapy they did and consciously uncoupling
- how our parents relationships and how they expressed love growing up can effect us and our relationships
- Which keychain she chose from my line and why!

I love this!! I already love both you and TP but this has been awesome!! I was a musician when I was younger but never could read music and did it by hearing what I needed to play, which made me feel like I was less than despite my talent. This episode and hearing about TP’s journey has been amazing!
