In this episode we talk about:

  • how there is no end to learning
  • what inspired his path to getting a Phd in psychology
  • how his desire to please his father influenced his path
  • where alcohol and drugs came into his life and how they came to running his life
  • the sober curious movement
  • how sometimes alcohol isn’t the problem, what is making a person hate their life or need to escape is the problem
  • what the word sober actually means by definition
  • how being socially anxious led him into leaning more on drugs and alcohol
  • falling into being a drug dealer while studying psychology at UCLA
  • being arrested several times, getting guns and finally having the SWAT team invade his home and getting sent to jail for one year
  • how he found himself back in school as no one would hire him after getting out of jail with a new passion for learning and learning about addiction
  • creating programs, a center, a book to give people a new way to heal from addiction
  • how to have conversation with people that you think are struggling with addiction
  • how his book the Abstinence Myth is changing peoples lives and getting people to start doing the work on themselves without the fear of giving up their addiction
  • the limited choice problem
  • how we can want change for our loved ones but they have to want it and being able to offer help in different ways then just you want help…you have to do it this way.
