Author, speaker, and podcast host, Mary Marantz, grew up in a single-wide trailer in rural West Virginia. The first of her immediate family to go to college, she went on to earn a law degree from the nation’s top-ranked law school, Yale. After ditching six-figure-salary law firm offers in London and New York, she started a business with her husband, Justin. Together they have built a successful online

education platform for creative entrepreneurs. She is also the host of the highly- ranked and popular podcast The Mary Marantz Show. Mary released her first book, “Dirt: Growing Strong Roots in What Makes the Broken Beautiful,” in September. She lives in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut, with her husband, Justin and their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed and Atticus.

In this episode we talk about:

  • growing up in a single wide trailer and how that formed her self-worth
  • feeling the urgency of getting out of her home town as soon as she graduated high school
  • how we carry out our lives based on wounds of our childhood and try to create who we need to be to be loved
  • attending law school at Yale and getting her master’s in London and how she would “protect” herself by using self deprecating humor and acting too cool
  • the healing of  having curious conversations with our parents learning about their childhoods and their wounds that likely effected how they raised us
  • graduating and realizing the career she dreamed of wasn’t the reality she hoped so taking a chance on creating a photography business with her boyfriend (now husband) at the time
  • wanting their photography business to be successful and proving the naysayers wrong and becoming global in demand photographers
  • making the choice to stop the worldwide travels of their photography business in order to make space to write her memoir.
  • pivoting their business to teaching online courses and taking years to make the space to keep their business AND write her book
  • how sharing and owning her story of being the girl in the trailer changed her life
  • the power of dropping your shame
  • Which keychain she chose from my line and why
