Harper Spero is a business coach who specializes in working with service-based newbie solopreneurs and small business owners. She works with clients to create businesses they love, determine how to get their idea out into the world and discover the freedom that comes with entrepreneurship. Harper is also the host of Made Visible, a podcast dedicated to people living with or affected by invisible illness.

She is a writer who focuses on chronicling her rare immunodeficiency that you’ve likely never heard of. She is based in New York City and spends her winters in Tel Aviv.

In this episode we talk about:

  • growing up in downtown New York City
  • being someone who learns by doing and recognizing that early on
  • volunteering and organizing while in high school to support 9/11 survivors at the holistic health center her mother run
  • creating a community service club as a junior in high school
  • choosing what she thought was the perfect college for her and what she wanted and it ending up not being the place for her
  • moving back to NYC and setting up internships where she ended up working her dream while being in college
  • moving around through different jobs in pr, music and more for years having 8 jobs in 10 years
  • always knowing she wanted to work for herself but not having the vision of what that was for years
  • the health conditions that brought a huge shock to her life and the diagnosis that less than 300 people in the world have
  • how her health made her look at what she was doing for work and starting to put her health and herself before her work
  • hiring a career coach and doing Myers-Briggs personality test to rediscover what she was truly passionate about.
  • reaching out to someone she admired and asking if she happen to need help and starting a new job where she felt it was the best it was going to be working for someone else
  • seeing she finally needed to put herself first and finding the people and places and things that supported her
  • getting more into personal development, learning about the coaching world and getting certified as a coach
  • seeing that she had marketing skills to support people in them promoting themselves and their businesses and passions
  • what inspired her to start her podcast focusing those that have, know and caretake for those with invisible illnesses
  • how most of us with invisible illness really struggle with the invisible part and not feeling fully seen in what we are going through
  • how to show up for those grieving, in pain, in illness when you don’t know what to say or do
  • Which keychain she chose from my line and why!
